Webinar 1 - The path forward for WHO: With or without US?
Keynote Speaker - Professor Kelley Lee
The planned withdrawal of the United States from World Health Organization membership, announced by the Trump Administration in June 2020, has created much uncertainty at a time of intense global efforts to fight the COVID-19 pandemic. This webinar will focus on the immediate impacts of this decision on the capacities of WHO and the US to navigate through the pandemic. If the US eventually withdraws from the UN specialized agency, critical questions about the long-term future of WHO as the “directing and coordinating body” for international health cooperation will need to be addressed. How prepared the world is for the next pandemic will depend on how longstanding concerns about global health governance are resolved. |
Webinar 2 - Global Health Ethics Beyond the Rhetoric of Solidarity Keynote Speaker - Associate Professor Sridhar Venkatapuram |
The COVID-19 pandemic has raised many complex ethical issues ranging from clinical decisions making and ethics of the social structural inequalities causing disease and deaths in vulnerable populations to the basis and form of global cooperation. This webinar will focus on how ethics becomes more important, no less, during emergencies. A/Prof Sridhar Venkatapuram will discuss how different ethical values are at play in the national pandemic responses, as well as why ethical values have to be made explicit in order to make pandemic recovery plans equitable and durable. |
